Designing and Building a Circuit

Whatever the environment, a huge amount of science and technical requirements go into designing and building a circuit. To meet FIA Grade One requirements—that is, for the track to be able to host a grand prix—permanent circuits must have a minimum track width of 12 meters, straights can’t be longer than 2 kilometers, the grid spots have to be 8 meters apart, and the pitlane entry has to be 12 meters. The circuit needs to have a permanent medical center too. You’ll often hear drivers complain over the radio to their race engineer about circuits being bumpy, but this is relative: FIA Grade One status allows for surface variations to be no greater than 0.08 inch up or down over the course of 13 feet.
